About FWB

Friends With Benefits

Friends With Benefits was conceptualized by a group of friends whose aim was start a dialogue to reduce the social stigma around depression. By getting our friends, coworkers and neighbors together to share stories, we hoped to illustrate that there are many people who are successful, contributing members of the community living (and thriving) with mental illness.

Launched in May 2012, Friends With Benefits has now raised over $48,957 for The Royal’s Jennie James Depression Research Fund to promote awareness, understanding, research and treatment of depression and to end the silence surrounding suicide. The Fund contributes directly to the Royal Ottawa Foundation for Mental Health to support the best possible patient care and leading edge research provided by the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre, the Brockville Mental Health Centre, and the uOttawa Institute of Mental Health Research. The 2014 event exceeded expectations: the advanced tickets were sold out a week before the event, there was friendly competition for the silent auction items donated by over 50 local businesses.

Since 2012, the event has attracted media attention from Rogers Daytime, Boom 99.7, the Ottawa Sun, Ottawa Citizen, Ottawa Life Magazine, Faces Magazine, Apt613,  and the blog Be Healthy Be Beautiful.

In 2015 we are moving to the main floor at Lago Bar – Grill – View to accommodate more guests, more great auction items, and more great surprises! Our goal is to raise over $100,000 for mental health research through our event by May 2016.
